Practice with Difficult Conversation in the Classroom, via Zoom

Description: |
This session open for faculty and staff will be similar to difficult conversations for advising on October 22 but the focus will be the classroom. Additional framework will be some advice from two books: Crucial conversations: Tools for talking when stakes are high by Kerry Patterson et al., and Courageous conversations on race by Glenn E. Singleton. The majority of the time will be spent in small groups practicing difficult conversations in the classroom via open-ended scenarios.

Dr. Rose Stremlau,
Assistant Professor of History at Davidson College, is presenting a guest
lecture via Zoom in HUM 101 Z Decolonizing the Carolinas on Thursday, November
12th at 8:00 am. Dr. Stremlau’s lecture is part of Wofford’s recognition of
Native American Heritage Month. The topic of Dr. Stremlau’s talk relates to a
book project that she is working on which centers on the “narrative of one
Cherokee person’s story – born prior to the Trail of Tears and eventually
migrating to Hawaii by way of California – and experiencing major moments in
US/Indian relations along the way,” according to Rose. She will specifically
be discussing the “problems of master narratives, the ethics of the archives,
and writing about survivance.”
